HOW TO START YOUR OWN ORGANIC GARDEN FOR FUN, HEALTH AND MONEY
SAVINGS
Once you have decided on what seeds to order and a general idea of how big your garden should be, you’ll need to decide on exactly what type of garden you want to have. Here are three basic organic garden plans to consider:
1) The largest of the three garden possibilities is a garden that will furnish all your vegetables year-round. This type of garden takes extra work to prepare and maintain, but if you give it your best effort, you should harvest enough vegetables from it to last you through the year, with both fresh foods and foods to store and use over the winter months.
This type of garden will certainly demand a lot of time and work. And unless you have lots of mulch and/or several hours a day to work in this type of garden, you’ll probably need to utilize mechanical cultivation.
The “year-round” garden also requires that you grow enough fresh foods to get you through the early and late growing seasons. Remember, the longer you eat fresh foods from your garden, the less you will have to store for use during the winter months.
2) The second type of organic garden to consider is one to produce selected vegetables for storage and the rest for fresh foods. As with the “year-round” garden, you should keep thus type of fresh garden going as long into autumn as possible It is also a good idea to try to be somewhat selective with this garden, planting vegetables that will accommodate your available storage areas. For example, if you have a freezer plant vegetables that freeze well— if you have a root cellar, plant that type of crop ‘if yOU don’t plan to pressure can any vegetables, then don’t plant more than you can eat fresh and/or frozen-
3) The third possibility is a fresh food garden or a salad garden. This type of garden requires that you plant something every couple of weeks all season long in order to maintain top-quality fresh vegetables.
This type of garden allows you to experiment with small plantings of exotic vegetables you have never tried before, and it can be incorporated into either of the two other types of gardens.
