HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST SUPPLEMENT

In general, if you have your doctor’s approval to take a supplement you should sure to choose a multivitamin that contains a balanced mixture of the essential vitamins and minerals, rather than a single vitamin or mineral. It’s important to

remember that an excessive amount of any one nutrient may prevent the body from absorbing and using other nutrients. Therefore, the multivitamin you choose should be at 100 percent of the Food and Drug Administration’s RDA for each nutrient. It isn’t necessary to exceed those recommended levels.

You should also make sure the multivitamin has an expiration date. Most vitamins and minerals lose their potency after a time and anything over three years old is most likely no longer effective. Many supplements don’t list any expiration date, making it impossible to tell how long they have been sitting on the shelf. If the bottle doesn’t have an expiration date, don’t buy the supplement.

The most important thing to remember when considering supplements is that you should not depend on them to make up for your own bad eating habits. The best way to get the nutrients you need is through a well-balanced diet.
